Managing water services on a narrowboat requires careful planning to ensure a steady supply of fresh water, efficient heating, and safe disposal of wastewater. On our 58-foot narrowboat, we’ve designed a system that integrates a fresh water tank, powered pumps, water heaters, and effective waste management, all while optimising space and maintaining convenience.

Fresh Water Supply: Tank and Distribution

At the heart of our water system is a large fresh water tank located under the bed in the bow of the boat. This strategic placement keeps the boat balanced and maximises the use of space.

  • Fresh Water Tank: The tank is capable of holding a substantial amount of water, ensuring we have a reliable supply for all onboard needs, from drinking and cooking to bathing and laundry. The tank is fitted with a water level gauge, allowing us to monitor usage and plan refills when necessary.

  • Water Distribution: Water from the tank is pumped throughout the boat using a high-efficiency 12V pump system. This system ensures consistent water pressure at all outlets, including sinks, showers, and appliances. The pump is powered by the boat’s battery bank, which is regularly charged via solar panels, shore power, or the engine alternator, ensuring uninterrupted service.

Water Heating: Instant Hot Water Solutions

A comfortable living experience on a narrowboat includes access to hot water on demand. We’ve implemented an instant hot water system that efficiently meets our needs while conserving energy.

  • Instant Water Heaters: Our boat is equipped with instant water heaters, one located in the kitchen and another in the bathroom. These heaters provide hot water on demand for sinks, the shower, and the washing machine, eliminating the need for a large, energy-consuming hot water tank. The heaters are powered by the 240V system, with dedicated circuits to ensure they operate efficiently without overloading the electrical system.

  • Temperature Control: Each water heater features adjustable temperature settings, allowing us to customise water temperatures for different uses. This flexibility not only enhances comfort but also helps conserve energy by avoiding unnecessary heating.

Wastewater Management: Efficient and Eco-Friendly

Proper disposal of wastewater is crucial for maintaining hygiene and environmental responsibility on a narrowboat. Our wastewater management system is designed to handle grey water (from sinks, showers, and the washing machine) and black water (from the toilet) effectively.

  • Grey Water Outlets: Wastewater from sinks, the shower, and the washing machine is pumped out through grey water outlets located at strategic points along the hull.

  • Gulper Pump: In the bathroom, a gulper pump is installed beneath the floor to handle grey water from the wet room. The pump efficiently moves water out of the boat, ensuring the bathroom remains dry and clean, even after use as a wet room.

  • Black Water Management: Our boat uses a cassette toilet system, where waste is collected in portable cassettes that can be easily emptied at designated disposal points. This system is straightforward and requires minimal infrastructure, making it ideal for narrowboat living.

  • Ventilation and Odour Control: Proper ventilation is key to managing odours associated with wastewater. We’ve installed ventilation systems in both the bathroom and kitchen to ensure that air circulates effectively, keeping the interior fresh and odour-free.

Conclusion

Our narrowboat’s water services system is a well-integrated network designed for efficiency, convenience, and environmental responsibility. With a large fresh water tank under the bed, instant water heaters, and a robust waste management system, we’ve ensured that all water-related needs are met with ease. Whether drawing fresh water, enjoying a hot shower, or managing wastewater, this system supports a comfortable and sustainable lifestyle on the water.
