This past weekend, we embarked on a serene cruise aboard Tilly Mint, making the most of a peaceful escape along the Kennet and Avon Canal. Their destination? The historic city of Bath. Setting off from the charming village of Bathampton, they made their way leisurely to Bath Top Lock, a mere mile from the city centre, promising a perfect weekend of relaxation and exploration.
Friday Evening: Arriving in Bath
As we arrived in Bath on Friday evening, the sun dipped low, casting a golden glow over the canal. Mooring the boat just before the Top Lock, we prepared to immerse ourselves in the beauty of Bath’s evening atmosphere. After a short walk from the canal, we strolled through the cobbled streets, choosing a delightful restaurant for an intimate dinner. The city’s blend of historic charm and vibrant evening life made for an unforgettable dining experience, with views of Bath’s iconic Georgian architecture setting the tone for the night.
Saturday Morning: Exploring Bath
Saturday began with a leisurely stroll around Bath. The weather was mild but planning to rain, and the city bustled with both locals and visitors exploring its many historical landmarks. From the iconic Roman Baths to the magnificent Bath Abbey, the morning was filled with awe-inspiring sights. We made sure to visit some local shops and cafés, soaking in the charm of the city before heading to Bath’s famous Thermae Bath Spa.
A Few Hours at Bath's Thermae Spa
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly our 3rd visit to Bath’s world-renowned Thermae Spa. After the morning walk, Adam treated himself to a rejuvenating massage, while Chris enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of the spa’s rooftop pool, with panoramic views of the city. The combination of warm, mineral-rich waters and the historic surroundings provided the perfect retreat. Refreshed and revitalised, we were ready to head back to Tilly Mint for the final leg of our weekend journey.
Saturday Evening: Pub Dinner by the Canal
By late afternoon, we had cruised back towards Bathampton, retracing our steps along the tranquil canal. The day ended with a relaxed dinner at a cosy pub near the canal, where we enjoyed classic British fare and reflected on the serene weekend. The canal-side location added to the charm, with the gentle ripples of water creating a peaceful backdrop to the evening.
Sunday: Heading Home
Sunday morning arrived too soon, and after a relaxed breakfast on board, it was time to bid farewell to Tilly Mint and the quiet beauty of the canal. The weekend had provided the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and rejuvenation, leaving us refreshed and ready for the week ahead.
This short but memorable trip from Bathampton to Bath showcased the joys of slow travel, where every moment is an opportunity to appreciate the scenery, unwind, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. For us, our weekend on Tilly Mint was a reminder of how much beauty lies just a short canal journey away.
