As we prepare to equip our 58-foot narrowboat, we’re planning to incorporate cutting-edge technology that will ensure our lifestyle remains comfortable, secure, and connected. From IoT security sensors and CCTV to satellite internet with 5G backup, our goal is to create a modern living space that meets all our needs, no matter where our journey takes us.

Security and Monitoring: Planning for Peace of Mind on the Water

Security is a top priority as we plan our narrowboat, especially when moored in remote locations. We intend to integrate a range of IoT (Internet of Things) sensors and monitoring systems to protect our boat and ensure peace of mind.

  • GPS Tracking: We plan to install a GPS tracker on the boat to provide real-time location data. This will allow us to monitor our boat’s position at all times, setting up geo-fencing alerts to notify us if the boat moves unexpectedly.

  • IoT Sensors: We’re considering equipping the narrowboat with various IoT sensors to monitor key environmental factors. These will include smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and sensors for temperature and humidity, all linked to our onboard system. The aim is to receive immediate alerts if there’s a fire, gas leak, or significant environmental change.

  • Moisture Sensors: Moisture sensors are also part of our plan, particularly in critical areas like the bilge and underfloor spaces. These sensors will provide early warnings of leaks or flooding, helping us address potential issues before they become serious.

  • CCTV Surveillance: For added security, we intend to install a CCTV system with cameras around the exterior of the boat. These cameras will be accessible via our smartphone or laptop, allowing us to monitor the boat remotely and receive alerts if any unexpected activity is detected.

Connectivity: Planning to Stay Connected Anywhere

Staying connected is essential for us, whether for work, entertainment, or keeping in touch with family and friends. Our connectivity plans for the narrowboat aim to ensure reliable internet access wherever we are.

  • Satellite Internet: We’re planning to use a satellite system as our primary internet connection, which will offer reliable, high-speed access even in remote areas where cellular networks might be weak.

  • 5G Backup: To complement the satellite internet, we plan to install a 5G router as a backup. This system will automatically switch to 5G when we’re in areas with strong cellular coverage, providing an additional layer of reliability and helping to manage data costs.

Entertainment: Planning a Home Cinema on the Water

Entertainment is an important part of our narrowboat experience, and we’re planning to set up a comprehensive system that offers the best of both TV and digital media.

  • TV and Laptop Integration: We plan to integrate a large flat-screen TV with our onboard laptop, allowing us to stream content, watch downloaded movies, or use the TV as an extended monitor. This setup will be easy to control, with all devices interconnected via HDMI and wireless networks.

  • Network Attached Storage (NAS): We’re also planning to install a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device to store our digital media library. This NAS will allow us to stream content throughout the boat, ensuring our favourite entertainment is always available, even when offline.

Conclusion

As we plan our narrowboat, we’re focused on incorporating technology that will make our life on the water secure, comfortable, and connected. With IoT sensors for safety, reliable satellite and 5G internet for connectivity, and an integrated entertainment system, we aim to create a living space that offers all the comforts of modern life while embracing the tranquillity and adventure of narrowboat living. Whether navigating through peaceful canals or moored in the countryside, we’re preparing to enjoy the best of both worlds with the technology we plan to install.
