First Day of Our Scottish Canal Adventure: From East Sussex to Gretna Green
Today marks the beginning of our much-anticipated 12-day holiday, exploring the scenic wonders of Scotland's Caledonian Canal. We set off from East Sussex with a sense of excitement, eager to embark on this journey with our dear friends Neil and Naomi, whose narrowboat has often served as our escape for weekend getaways. This time, however, we're taking things a step further—twelve days of pure exploration and adventure lie ahead.
Our route today took us on a comfortable drive up the spine of the UK, from the rolling hills of East Sussex to the historic village of Gretna Green, where we chose to break the trip with an overnight stay.
A Brief History of Gretna Green
Gretna Green is a place steeped in romantic history. Located just over the border in Scotland, it became famous in the 18th century as the destination for young English couples eloping to marry. Thanks to a difference in marriage laws between England and Scotland, Gretna Green was the first stop over the border where a couple could legally marry without their parents' consent. The Old Blacksmith’s Shop, where these marriages often took place, is now a symbol of love and rebellion, making it a fitting place to begin our own journey of discovery.
After settling into our accommodation, we had the chance to wander around this quaint village, soaking in the charm and history that seems to linger in the air. A leisurely dinner with Neil and Naomi provided the perfect end to our first day, filled with laughter and the excitement of what’s to come.
Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, we continue our journey towards Scotland’s stunning Caledonian Canal, where the true essence of our adventure will unfold. The canal, which stretches from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, is surrounded by some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes. We can’t wait to begin exploring, with our narrowboat as both our mode of transport and our home for the next several days.
For now, we rest and recharge, ready to delve into the natural beauty and rich history that awaits us. Stay tuned for more updates as we navigate through the heart of Scotland, making memories that will last a lifetime.
