Our journey through the Scottish Highlands continues today as we travel from the historic village of Gretna Green to the picturesque Laggan, where our boat awaits to explore the Caledonian Canal. This is a day we've been eagerly anticipating, as it marks the beginning of our adventure on one of Scotland’s most iconic waterways.

Morning: Farewell to Gretna Green

We began the day with a hearty Scottish breakfast, fuelling up for the drive ahead. Gretna Green, famous for its romantic history, bid us farewell with its quaint charm. The village, known for runaway weddings since the 18th century, left us with a sense of tradition and a touch of nostalgia as we set off on the road.

The Drive: Through the Heart of Scotland

The drive from Gretna Green to Laggan is a visual feast. We wound our way through lush valleys, past glistening lochs, and over rolling hills, each mile offering a new postcard-perfect scene. The rugged beauty of the Highlands never ceases to amaze, and today was no exception.

Arrival in Laggan: A Warm Welcome

Arriving in Laggan, we were greeted by the sight of the Caledonian Canal stretching out before us. The canal, a masterpiece of 19th-century engineering, connects the Scottish east coast at Inverness with the west coast at Corpach near Fort William. It’s not just a canal; it’s a journey through time and nature, and we’re thrilled to be part of it.

Our boat, a comfortable and well-equipped cruiser, was ready and waiting for us. After a warm welcome and a thorough briefing from the staff, we were set to embark on our canal adventure. The boat, our home for the next few days, offers a unique way to experience the Highlands—at a slow, serene pace, with the freedom to stop and explore whenever something catches our eye.

Evening: Settling In and First Impressions

The evening was spent settling into our boat and getting acquainted with the canal's rhythm. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the water, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement for the days ahead. The Caledonian Canal promises a journey filled with natural beauty, historical sites, and the kind of tranquility that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Tomorrow, we begin our exploration in earnest, but for now, we’re content to relax on deck, listening to the gentle lapping of water against the hull and soaking in the peaceful surroundings. The adventure has officially begun, and we couldn’t be more excited.

Stay tuned for Day 3, where we’ll begin navigating the Caledonian Canal, discovering its hidden gems, and immersing ourselves in the breathtaking landscapes that make this part of Scotland so special.
